Enjoying Galway Port

The Galway port was one of the largest in Europe during the 16th century. It carried out extensive trading with various ports around the world like Newfoundland, St. Malo and West Indies. Lately, it has become an inseparable feature of many festivals and well known to racing enthusiasts.

The Galway Hooker, a traditional Irish boat, has been the key to trade and finishing in Galway for centuries. It is a slightly rarer sight nowadays as it had not been used for trade and transportation of goods like turf since 1975. In 1979, the festival Cruinniú na mBád in Kinvara was set up to recreate and celebrate the old turf route from Connemara to Kinvara and the survival of unique Galway traditions.
